So the black/red stripes are just black decals? Would be easier/nicer to paint the red and mask the stripes before painting black. Would be hard to align maybe, but a better result?

Yeah the body stripes are just black decals and the bonnet stripes are just red decals: scalemates.com/content/content.php?id=608987

I think theoretically you could get a much neater result by masking instead of the using the decals. However I don't think I could. I've never had much luck with masking, the paint always bleeds underneath for me.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Stefan, I have considered trying an airbrush but it just seems like such a faff. For me it is more important to enjoy the build and I'm less fussed about the quality of the finished product, which is why I stick to brushes.

George, I've tried spray paint on other projects and made such a mess with them I've never tried them on my models.

Couple of points if I may. With regards to brush painting, if you're using Tamiya paints try thinning them with de-ionised water or few drops of retarder. This will help a lot with brush painting.

Tesco sells de-ionised water, so you can one large bottle very cheap and it will last a long time. This plus decent flat brush should help making smoother brush strokes and will prevent Tamiya paints drying too quickly.

As a point of interest, I've also used screenwash for thinning Tamiya paint. However, it was a while ago and apparently they've changed the formula? Still, when you top up the car, you could always leave a bit in the bottle and see if it works, for you?

That's very interesting, never thought about screen wash. I would test it on some plastic spoons first.

Definitely mate. I always recommend testing it first. I doubt it will work on their LP range, because they're lacquer paint, however I did use it on the X and XF paints. Worth a try lads, especially if you have a car?
